Why We Only Use Natural Fabrics
Why We Only Use Natural Fabrics
For most of human history clothing came from the earth.
Linen from flax.
Cotton from plants.
Silk from silkworms.
Wool from animals.
These fabrics were breathable, durable, biodegradable and made to last for years. Clothing was not disposable. It was valuable, repaired, cared for and worn for a long time.
Everything changed in the last century when synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon and acrylic were introduced. Clothing became cheaper to produce, faster to manufacture and easier to replace. Fashion became faster but quality became lower and clothing slowly became disposable.
At Prana Collection we chose a different path. We work primarily with linen and other natural fabrics because we believe clothing should be beautiful, breathable, long lasting and able to return back to nature.
A Few Facts About Synthetic vs Natural Fabrics
Fact 1
Polyester is plastic. It is made from petroleum which is the same material used to make plastic bottles. Today more than 60 percent of clothing worldwide is made from synthetic fibers and most of it is polyester.
Fact 2
Every time synthetic clothing is washed it releases microplastics into the water. Scientists estimate that hundreds of thousands of microplastic fibers can be released in a single laundry load and these microplastics have now been found in oceans, drinking water and even the human body.
Fact 3
Polyester can take hundreds of years to decompose while natural fibers like linen and cotton can biodegrade naturally in the environment.
Why Linen
Linen is one of the oldest and most respected fabrics in human history. It was worn in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome often by royalty and priests. Linen was considered a luxury fabric because it was labor intensive to produce and extremely durable.
Linen is breathable, strong and becomes softer over time instead of wearing out quickly. It can last for many years when cared for properly and when it eventually reaches the end of its life it can return back to the earth.
This is the philosophy behind our garments.
We believe clothing should not be disposable.
We believe clothing should be worn for years not seasons.
We believe clothing should come from the earth and return back to the earth.
That is why we work with natural fabrics.
That is why we produce in small batches.
That is why we design timeless silhouettes.
Because real luxury is not excess.
Real luxury is intentional.
May the life force be with you.
With love,
Prana Collection.
