Forever Chemicals, Forever Consequences: PFAS in Synthetic Fabrics and Female Fertility

by The Prana Collection 16 Jun 2026

They are called forever chemicals for a reason. PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a family of more than four thousand synthetic compounds that do not break down in the environment, and do not break down in the human body. Once absorbed, they accumulate in tissues and remain there for years. They are in drinking water, in food packaging, in non-stick cookware, and they are in the performance finishes applied to many synthetic fabrics, from athletic wear to water-resistant outerwear to the everyday polyester that lines most modern wardrobes.

What PFAS Are and How They Enter the Body

PFAS are used in textiles as stain-resistant, water-repellent, and wrinkle-resistant treatments, the finishes that make synthetic fabrics feel polished and functional. They are applied to the fabric surface and, through heat, friction, and the constant contact of skin, they migrate from the garment into the body via transdermal absorption.

Once inside, PFAS distribute throughout body systems, with particular accumulation in the liver, kidneys, thyroid gland, and reproductive organs. The half-life of certain PFAS compounds in the human body ranges from three to nine years, meaning a single period of exposure can result in years of ongoing biological presence.

PFAS and Female Fertility: What the Research Shows

The reproductive effects of PFAS exposure in women have been studied extensively over the past two decades, and the findings are consistent and concerning. Women with higher PFAS blood levels have been shown to take significantly longer to conceive, with some studies reporting a 40% reduced probability of becoming pregnant within a given menstrual cycle.

A landmark 2020 study published in Human Reproduction examined PFAS levels in women undergoing IVF treatment. Women with higher PFAS concentrations had significantly lower rates of successful embryo implantation and clinical pregnancy. Researchers noted that PFAS appear to interfere with the hormonal signaling required for endometrial receptivity, the uterine lining's ability to accept a fertilized embryo.

PFAS and Endometriosis

Endometriosis, a painful, inflammatory condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, affects an estimated 10% of women of reproductive age and is one of the leading causes of infertility. Research published in Environmental Health Perspectives has found associations between PFAS exposure and increased risk of endometriosis diagnosis.

The proposed mechanism involves PFAS's estrogenic properties, certain PFAS compounds can activate estrogen receptors, potentially fueling the estrogen-dependent growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. For women already managing endometriosis, reducing PFAS exposure from clothing is not a peripheral concern. It is a direct intervention in the chemical environment driving their condition.

PFAS and Miscarriage Risk

Multiple studies have identified associations between PFAS blood levels and increased risk of pregnancy loss. A 2020 meta-analysis of 12 studies found that higher PFAS concentrations were associated with a significantly elevated risk of miscarriage. Researchers proposed several mechanisms: disruption of thyroid hormone function (critical for early pregnancy maintenance), interference with progesterone signaling, and impairment of placental development.

The Thyroid Connection

PFAS are known thyroid disruptors. They can compete with thyroid hormones for binding proteins in the bloodstream, effectively reducing the amount of active thyroid hormone available to cells. For women with subclinical hypothyroidism, a condition that can exist without clear bloodwork findings, PFAS exposure may be a meaningful contributor to symptoms including fatigue, weight resistance, cold intolerance, brain fog, and cycle irregularity.

The Irony of Performance Fabric

There is a profound irony in the fact that the fabrics marketed as performance-enhancing, the moisture-wicking, stain-repellent, quick-dry synthetics worn for yoga, running, and active living, are among the most likely to carry PFAS coatings. The pursuit of optimized athletic performance may, for women who wear these garments against the skin for hours each day, be quietly undermining the hormonal infrastructure that makes vitality possible.

Linen: Naturally Functional, Chemically Clean

Linen requires no chemical treatments to perform. Its hollow fiber structure is naturally moisture-wicking. Its weave is naturally breathable. Its surface is naturally resistant to odor and bacterial growth. It does not need PFAS because nature has already solved the problems PFAS were engineered to address, and it has solved them without accumulating in your reproductive organs.

When you choose linen, you are choosing a fabric that has already done the work of being functional, quietly, cleanly, for thousands of years. The performance was always there. It just did not need a chemical coating to prove it.
